Dental Implants

Dental implants are a great way to replace broken, chipped, decayed, or missing teeth and also provide a fixed solution to having removable partial or complete dentures.

The Benefits of Tooth Replacement

  • Smile Improvement – Your new tooth can improve your smile and gum health
  • Confidence – You no longer have to worry about not having a tooth in place. Your smile, bite, and bone should look normal and healthy again
  • Improved Oral Health – Having an implant in place to replace a lost tooth can add to your gum health. The new implant allows the overall area to be brushed, flossed, and it provides support to other teeth
  • Eating and Talking – You can now eat and talk normally with all your teeth in their proper place

Who Qualifies for Tooth Replacement?

The best candidates for implant dentistry are those that have healthy bone and support in the gum area of the mouth. Having the right support is crucial to providing an environment that will make the procedure a success. The first step is to meet with Dr. David Juliani and get a full examination and consultation. He will also review your full medical and dental history.

The Process

The procedure is fairly straightforward and not too complicated, but it will require patience. The new prosthetic tooth is connected to an implant- a titanium root that will replace the original root inside the gum. The new root will be placed into the gum and over time it will fuse with the gum tissue to create a solid, natural, and supportive area for the new tooth. Once it fuses, a piece called an “abutment” will be placed on top of the implant. The last step is to attach the new prosthetic tooth to the abutment to fill in the space where your natural tooth once resided.

Procedural Steps

All steps leading up to the exam will be catered to your needs and schedule. Below are the basic steps of implant dentistry.

The basic steps include:

  1. Numbing the area with a local anesthetic to alleviate any discomfort during the procedure.
  1. The new tooth root made of titanium will be positioned into the bone socket to replace the old root and prepare the area for the new tooth.
  1. Once the tooth root has adapted and all support for the gums, root, and area is ready, the abutment is placed on the root. The abutment will be the attachment site for your crown.
  1. Your customized crown will be created with CEREC Technology to match the old tooth. This restoration will be attached to the abutment and will provide you with a brand new functioning tooth.

After Care

You should experience little to mild discomfort following the procedure. You can take pain relievers like Tylenol to remedy any small amounts of pain. Normal life and activities are resumed fairly quickly with little interruption. The great benefit of dental implants is that they should last you a lifetime if well cared for with a routine maintenance plan in place.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is considered a good candidate for dental implants?

Almost anyone with one or more missing or damaged teeth may benefit from dental implants in Rochester Hills, MI. Dr. McClelland will examine your teeth and let you know if implants are right for your situation.

How long do dental implants last?

Dental implants look and function like natural teeth; which also means they may be affected by sudden trauma or similar circumstances. Otherwise, it is entirely possible for implants to last a lifetime.

Are dental implants susceptible to decay?

You will want to take care of all your teeth on a regular basis, including any implants you have inserted. However, dental implants are made of titanium, so they are not susceptible to decay.

Are dental implants covered by insurance?

In some instances, dental implants may be covered to some extent by dental insurance. Every situation is different, however, so you will want to check with your insurance provider to determine what applies to your coverage for dentistry in Rochester Hills, MI.

Can implants be a substitute for dentures?

Dental implants are fixed to the bone and not removable, so they are not an exact substitute for dentures. But if there is a need to stabilize existing dentures, it might be possible to insert implants underneath them. Whether or not this is appropriate for your situation can be discussed during your initial visit to our dentist in Rochester Hills, MI.

What is involved in receiving an implant?

An initial consultation with an oral surgeon of your choice is the first step. We will be glad to refer you to a qualified doctor in your area if necessary.  The initial phase of treatment begins with the oral surgeon. Your implant will be surgically placed, and our practice will fit and place the crown restoration for you. An implant generally takes several months to finish but is in most instances the healthiest, most reliable and longest lasting restoration option.
